Q2. NCERT Exercise
Describe the components of an ecosystem. (What are different Biotic and Abiotic factors that affect the functioning of an Ecosystem? Discuss).

An ecosystem comprises two main structural components — Abiotic and Biotic — which interact to perform four functional aspects (Productivity, Decomposition, Energy flow, and Nutrient cycling):

1. Abiotic Components (Non-living factors):
  • Inorganic & Organic Substances: Water, air ($\text{O}_2, \text{CO}_2, \text{N}_2$), soil minerals (phosphates, nitrates, calcium) and humic substances.
  • Climatic Factors: Solar radiation (light), temperature, day-length, wind and humidity, which regulate the metabolic rate and functioning of the entire ecosystem.
2. Biotic Components (Living organisms):
  • (i) Producers (Autotrophs): Green plants (herbaceous and woody plants on land; phytoplankton, algae and macrophytes in water) that fix solar radiant energy into chemical food energy.
  • (ii) Consumers (Heterotrophs): Animals that depend directly or indirectly on plants for food — Primary consumers / Herbivores (insects, cattle, zooplankton), Secondary consumers / Primary carnivores (birds, fishes, wolf), and Tertiary / Top carnivores (man, lion, hawk).
  • (iii) Decomposers (Saprotrophs): Heterotrophic microbes (fungi, bacteria and flagellates) that decompose dead organic detritus into simple inorganic nutrients for reuse by producers.

Q3. NCERT Exercise NCERT Exemplar
Define ecological pyramids and describe with examples, pyramids of number and biomass (and explain the Pyramid of Energy).

Ecological Pyramids: Graphical representations of the food or energy relationship between organisms at different trophic levels (expressed in terms of number, biomass or energy), where the base represents producers (first trophic level) and the apex represents tertiary/top consumers.

1
Pyramid of Numbers: Represents the number of individuals at each trophic level.
• Upright in Grassland: Producers ($\sim 58,42,000$ plants) $\rightarrow$ Primary consumers ($7,08,000$ insects) $\rightarrow$ Secondary consumers ($3,54,000$) $\rightarrow$ Top carnivores ($3$).
• Inverted / Spindle-shaped on a Big Tree: $1$ big tree supports hundreds of herbivorous insects and thousands of parasites on them.
2
Pyramid of Biomass: Represents total dry weight ($\text{kg m}^{-2}$) of standing crop at each trophic level.
• Upright in Terrestrial Ecosystems: Producers ($809\text{ kg m}^{-2}$) $\rightarrow$ PC ($37$) $\rightarrow$ SC ($11$) $\rightarrow$ TC ($1.5\text{ kg m}^{-2}$).
• Inverted in Sea / Aquatic Ecosystem: Biomass of zooplanktons ($21\text{ kg m}^{-2}$) and fishes far exceeds the small standing crop of phytoplanktons ($4\text{ kg m}^{-2}$) at any given instant.
3
Pyramid of Energy: Always Upright and can never be inverted, because at each trophic transfer 90% energy is lost as heat and only 10% is passed on ($10,000\text{ J} \rightarrow 1,000\text{ J} \rightarrow 100\text{ J} \rightarrow 10\text{ J}$).

Q4. NCERT Exercise
What is primary productivity? Give brief description of factors that affect primary productivity.
  • Primary Productivity: The rate at which biomass or organic matter is produced per unit area over a time period by plants during photosynthesis, expressed as $\text{g m}^{-2}\text{ yr}^{-1}$ or $(\text{kcal m}^{-2})\text{ yr}^{-1}$. It is divided into:
    1. Gross Primary Productivity (GPP): Total rate of production of organic matter during photosynthesis.
    2. Net Primary Productivity (NPP): Available biomass for heterotrophs after respiratory losses ($R$): $\text{GPP} - R = \text{NPP}$. (Annual NPP of whole biosphere is 170 billion tons, of which oceans produce only 55 billion tons).
  • Factors Affecting Primary Productivity:
    • 1. Plant Species & Photosynthetic Capacity: Nature of plant species inhabiting a particular area and their chlorophyll efficiency.
    • 2. Solar Radiation & Temperature: Intensity and duration of sunlight and ambient temperature.
    • 3. Water & Soil Nutrients: Availability of soil moisture and mineral nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus).
Q5. NCERT Exercise
Define decomposition and describe the processes and products of decomposition.

Decomposition: The process by which decomposers break down complex organic matter (detritus — dead plant remains like leaves, bark, flowers and dead animal remains/faecal matter) into simple inorganic substances like $\text{CO}_2$, water and nutrients. It involves five steps operating simultaneously:

1
Fragmentation: Detritivores (e.g., earthworm) break down detritus into smaller particles.
2
Leaching: Water-soluble inorganic nutrients go down into the soil horizon and get precipitated as unavailable salts.
3
Catabolism: Bacterial and fungal enzymes degrade detritus into simpler inorganic substances.
4
Humification: Leads to accumulation of a dark-coloured, amorphous, colloidal substance called humus in soil, which is highly resistant to microbial action and acts as a reservoir of nutrients.
5
Mineralisation: Humus is further degraded by some microbes to release inorganic nutrients ($\text{CO}_2, \text{H}_2\text{O}$ and minerals).

Q6. NCERT Exercise
Give an account of energy flow in an ecosystem.
  • 1. Solar Energy & PAR: Sun is the only source of energy for all ecosystems (except deep-sea hydrothermal vents). Less than 50% of incident solar radiation is Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR), and plants capture only 2–10% of the PAR to sustain the entire living world.
  • 2. Unidirectional Flow & Laws of Thermodynamics: Energy flows unidirectionally from $\text{Sun} \rightarrow \text{Producers} \rightarrow \text{Consumers}$ (First Law), and a constant energy supply is needed to counteract universal disorderliness/entropy as heat is lost at each step (Second Law).
  • 3. Grazing (GFC) & Detritus Food Chains (DFC):
    • GFC: $\text{Grass (Producer)} \rightarrow \text{Goat (Primary Consumer)} \rightarrow \text{Man (Secondary Consumer)}$ (major conduit in aquatic ecosystems).
    • DFC: Begins with dead organic matter degraded by saprotrophic fungi and bacteria (major conduit in terrestrial ecosystems).
  • 4. Lindeman's 10 Per Cent Law: Only 10% of energy is transferred to each trophic level from the lower level, restricting trophic levels to 3–5.
Q7.
Explain in brief with suitable diagram about Phosphorus Cycle in an Ecosystem.
  • 1. Sedimentary Cycle & Biological Importance: Phosphorus cycle is a sedimentary biogeochemical cycle whose natural reservoir is rock (Earth's crust) in the form of phosphates. Phosphorus is a major constituent of biological membranes, nucleic acids (DNA, RNA), cellular energy transfer systems (ATP), bones and teeth.
  • 2. Mechanism of Cycling: When rocks weather, minute amounts of phosphates dissolve in soil solution and are absorbed by plant roots (producers). Herbivores and other animals obtain phosphorus from plants. When plants and animals die, phosphate-solubilising bacteria decompose the detritus and release phosphorus back into the soil.
  • 3. Differences from Carbon Cycle: Unlike the carbon cycle, there is no respiratory release of phosphorus into the atmosphere, and atmospheric inputs of phosphorus through rainfall are much smaller.

Q8.
(a) Write a note on food pyramid in pond ecosystem. (b) What is food chain? Describe food chain of a grassland ecosystem.
(a) Food Pyramid in a Pond Ecosystem:
  • In a shallow freshwater pond, organisms are linked through a food chain: Phytoplankton (Producers) $\rightarrow$ Zooplankton $\rightarrow$ Crustaceans/Small Fish $\rightarrow$ Larger Fish.
  • The Pyramid of Numbers and Pyramid of Energy in a pond are upright, whereas the Pyramid of Biomass is inverted (small standing crop of phytoplankton supports a larger biomass of zooplankton and fishes).
(b) Food Chain of a Grassland Ecosystem:
  • A food chain is a sequence of trophic levels through which food energy travels from producers to ultimate consumers.
  • In a grassland grazing food chain: Grass Plants (First trophic level / Producers) $\rightarrow$ Herbivorous Insects / Grasshopper (Second trophic level / Primary consumers, also called 'key industry animals') $\rightarrow$ Predator Insects / Frogs (Secondary consumers) $\rightarrow$ Insectivorous Birds / Snakes $\rightarrow$ Hawk (Top carnivore).
Q9. NCERT Exemplar
A farmer harvests his crop and expresses his harvest in three different ways: (a) I have harvested 10 quintals of wheat. (b) I have harvested 10 quintals of wheat today in one acre of land. (c) I have harvested 10 quintals of wheat in one acre of land, 6 months after sowing. Do the above statements mean one and the same thing? If your answer is 'no', explain the meaning of each expression.

No, the three statements do not mean the same thing in ecology:

a
"10 quintals of wheat": Represents simply the Total Biomass (total weight of organic matter harvested without reference to area or time).
b
"10 quintals of wheat today in one acre of land": Represents the Standing Crop / Primary Production (mass of living biomass present per unit area at a given time, expressed as $\text{weight m}^{-2}$).
c
"10 quintals of wheat in one acre of land, 6 months after sowing": Represents Primary Productivity (rate of biomass production per unit area per unit time, expressed as $\text{g m}^{-2}\text{ yr}^{-1}$).

a
Q10. NCERT Exemplar
(a) Justify the following statement in terms of ecosystem dynamics: "Nature tends to increase the gross primary productivity, while man tends to increase the net primary productivity". (b) Which of the following ecosystems will be more productive in terms of primary productivity? Justify your answer: A young forest, a natural old forest, a shallow polluted lake, alpine meadow.
  • (a) GPP vs NPP in Nature and Man-made Ecosystems:
    • Nature builds complex, multi-layered climax communities with high species diversity to maximise solar energy capture (high Gross Primary Productivity — GPP), even though a large part is used in respiration ($R$).
    • Man practices monoculture agriculture (crop fields) with short-duration crops, fertilisers and pest control to minimise respiratory losses ($R$) and maximise harvestable yield (high Net Primary Productivity — NPP).
  • (b) Most Productive Ecosystem: A young forest will be the most productive in terms of net primary productivity because it has actively growing young plants with high photosynthetic rates and relatively low respiratory biomass loss compared to an old climax forest, polluted lake or cold alpine meadow.
Q11. NCERT Exemplar
(a) "The energy flow in the ecosystem follows the second law of thermodynamics." Explain. (b) What will happen to an ecosystem if: (i) All producers are removed; (ii) All organisms of herbivore level are eliminated; and (iii) All top carnivore population is removed?
  • (a) Second Law of Thermodynamics in Ecosystem: Ecosystems are not exempt from the Second Law of Thermodynamics. They require a constant supply of solar energy to synthesise the molecules they require, to counteract the universal tendency toward increasing disorderliness (entropy), and at every energy transfer, 90% of energy is lost as heat.
  • (b) Consequences on the Ecosystem:
    • (i) If all producers are removed: Solar energy fixation will stop completely, and all consumers (herbivores and carnivores) will starve and die, collapsing the entire ecosystem.
    • (ii) If all herbivores are eliminated: Carnivores will die due to lack of food, while producers will overgrow initially and nutrient cycling will be disrupted.
    • (iii) If all top carnivores are removed: Herbivore populations will multiply unchecked, leading to overgrazing of vegetation, desertification and eventual starvation.

BasisArtificial / Man-made EcosystemNatural Ecosystem
1. Species DiversityVery low species diversity (often monoculture) with simple, short food chains.High species diversity with complex, interconnected food webs.
2. Self-sustainabilityNot self-sustaining; requires continuous human intervention (fertilisers, irrigation, weeding, cleaning).Self-sustaining and self-regulating without human intervention.
3. Nutrient CyclingIncomplete nutrient cycling (biomass is harvested and removed).Complete and efficient biogeochemical nutrient cycling.

(a) The biodiversity increases when one moves from the pioneer to the climax stage. What could be the explanation? (b) What will be the $P/R$ (Production/Respiration) ratio of a climax community and a pioneer community? Explain.
  • (a) Increase in Biodiversity from Pioneer to Climax Stage: As succession progresses, weathering and decomposition increase soil depth, humus content, moisture holding capacity and nutrient availability. This allows taller, varied vegetation (shrubs and trees) to establish vertical stratification, creating numerous new ecological niches and microhabitats that support a high diversity of plants, animals and decomposers.
  • (b) $P/R$ Ratio of Pioneer vs Climax Community:
    • In a Pioneer Community, $P/R > 1$ (Gross production exceeds community respiration, allowing net accumulation of organic biomass).
    • In a stable Climax Community, $P/R = 1$ (Gross primary production is balanced by total community respiration, maintaining equilibrium).
Q14. NCERT Exemplar
What is a biogeochemical cycle? What is the role of the reservoir in a biogeochemical cycle? Give an example of a sedimentary cycle with reservoir located in earth's crust.
  • 1. Biogeochemical Cycle: The movement and repeated circulation of nutrient elements (like carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur) through the biotic (living organisms) and abiotic (rocks, air, water) components of an ecosystem is called a biogeochemical cycle.
  • 2. Role of the Reservoir Pool: The function of the reservoir (atmosphere/hydrosphere for gaseous cycles; Earth's crust for sedimentary cycles) is to meet the deficit of nutrients which occurs due to imbalance between the rate of influx and the rate of efflux in the cycling pool.
  • 3. Example of Sedimentary Cycle: Phosphorus Cycle (and Sulphur Cycle) — its natural reservoir is phosphate rocks in the Earth's crust.
