PART 3: 5 MARKS QUESTIONS (ALL 10 Qs)
Q1. NCERT Exercise
Define Biodiversity. Describe in brief the three important components/levels of biodiversity with suitable examples.

Biodiversity: The term 'Biodiversity' was coined by W.G. Rosen (1985) and popularised by sociobiologist Edward Wilson to describe the combined diversity (heterogeneity) at all levels of biological organisation ranging from macromolecules within cells to biomes. Its three main components are:

1
Genetic Diversity: A single species shows high diversity at the genetic level over its distributional range. For example, genetic variation in the medicinal plant Rauwolfia vomitoria growing in different Himalayan ranges in terms of potency and concentration of the active chemical reserpine. India has more than 50,000 genetically different strains of rice and 1,000 varieties of mango.
2
Species Diversity: Diversity at the species level (species richness and relative abundance within a region). For example, the Western Ghats have a greater amphibian species diversity than the Eastern Ghats.
3
Ecological Diversity: Diversity at the ecosystem level (Alpha — within community, Beta — between communities, and Gamma — regional diversity). For instance, India with its deserts, rain forests, mangroves, coral reefs, wetlands, estuaries and alpine meadows has a much greater ecosystem diversity than a Scandinavian country like Norway.

Q2. NCERT Exercise
What are the four major causes of biodiversity losses ('The Evil Quartet') in a geographical region? Explain each with examples.

The accelerated rates of species extinctions are largely due to four major human-induced causes, collectively called 'The Evil Quartet':

1
Habitat Loss and Fragmentation (Most Important Cause): Tropical rain forests once covering more than 14% of the earth's land surface now cover no more than 6%. The Amazon rain forest ('lungs of the planet') is being cleared for cultivating soya beans or for conversion to grasslands for raising beef cattle. Breaking large habitats into small fragments badly affects migratory birds and mammals requiring large territories.
2
Over-exploitation: When human 'need' turns to 'greed', it leads to over-exploitation of natural resources. Extinction of Steller's sea cow and Passenger pigeon in the last 500 years was due to over-exploitation, and many marine fish populations are currently over-harvested.
3
Alien Species Invasions: Unintentional or deliberate introduction of exotic species causes decline or extinction of indigenous species. Examples: Nile perch introduced into Lake Victoria led to extinction of $>200$ species of cichlid fish; invasive weeds like carrot grass (Parthenium), Lantana and water hyacinth (Eichhornia); and illegal introduction of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus).
4
Co-extinctions: When a species becomes extinct, the plant and animal species associated with it in an obligatory way also become extinct (e.g., a host fish and its specific parasites, or a co-evolved plant-pollinator mutualism).

Q3.
Why should we conserve biodiversity? Explain the Narrowly utilitarian, Broadly utilitarian and Ethical arguments in detail.

The reasons for conserving biodiversity are grouped into three categories:

1
Narrowly Utilitarian Arguments (Direct Economic Benefits): Humans derive countless direct economic benefits from nature — food (cereals, pulses, fruits), firewood, fibre, construction material, industrial products (tannins, lubricants, dyes, resins, perfumes) and medicines. More than 25% of all drugs sold worldwide are derived from plants and 25,000 plant species are used in traditional medicines. Exploring molecular, genetic and species-level diversity for products of economic importance is called bioprospecting.
2
Broadly Utilitarian Arguments (Ecosystem Services): Biodiversity plays a major role in ecosystem services that nature provides free of cost:
• Oxygen Production: The Amazon forest produces 20% of the total oxygen in the earth's atmosphere through photosynthesis.
• Pollination: Provided by bees, bumblebees, birds and bats (essential for fruits and seeds).
• Climate Moderation, Flood/Erosion Control & Aesthetic Pleasures: Walking through thick woods, watching spring flowers in bloom, or waking up to a bulbul's song.
3
Ethical Arguments: Philosophically and spiritually, every species has an intrinsic value even if it is not of current economic value to us. We have a moral duty to care for their well-being and pass on our biological legacy in good order to future generations.

Q4.
How do we conserve biodiversity? Explain both In-situ conservation and Ex-situ conservation methods in detail.
1. In-situ (On-site) Conservation (Within Natural Habitat):

Conserving and protecting the whole ecosystem so that its biodiversity at all levels is protected (e.g., saving the entire forest to save the tiger):

  • (i) Biodiversity Hotspots: Regions with very high species richness and high endemism. There are 34 hotspots in the world (covering $<2\%$ land area; protecting them can reduce extinctions by 30%), of which 3 cover India — Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, Indo-Burma, and Himalaya.
  • (ii) Protected Areas in India: Legally protected as 14 Biosphere Reserves, 90 National Parks, and 448 Wildlife Sanctuaries.
  • (iii) Sacred Groves: Forest tracts venerated and given total protection by local communities (found in Khasi & Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan, Western Ghats, and Sarguja, Chanda & Bastar in M.P.).
2. Ex-situ (Off-site) Conservation (Outside Natural Habitat):

Threatened animals and plants are taken out from their natural habitat and placed in special settings for urgent protection and care:

  • (i) Zoological Parks, Botanical Gardens & Wildlife Safari Parks: Maintain threatened species and animals that have become extinct in the wild.
  • (ii) Cryopreservation, Seed Banks & Tissue Culture: Preserving gametes of threatened species in viable condition at $-196^\circ\text{C}$ (liquid nitrogen), in vitro fertilisation, tissue culture propagation, and storing seeds of different genetic strains in seed banks.

Q5. NCERT Exemplar
Explain the two major Patterns of Biodiversity: (a) Latitudinal gradients (b) Species-Area relationship (with equation and graph)
जैव-विविधता के दो प्रमुख प्रतिरूपों (Patterns of Biodiversity) को समझाइए: (a) अक्षांशीय प्रवणता (Latitudinal gradients) (b) जाति-क्षेत्र संबंध (Species-Area relationship — समीकरण एवं ग्राफ सहित)
(a) Latitudinal Gradients in Biodiversity:
  • Species diversity decreases as we move away from the equator towards the poles. Tropics (latitudinal range of $23.5^\circ\text{N}$ to $23.5^\circ\text{S}$) harbour much more species than temperate or polar areas.
  • Examples: Colombia near the equator has nearly 1,400 species of birds, India has $>1,200$ species, New York at $41^\circ\text{N}$ has 105 species, and Greenland at $71^\circ\text{N}$ has only 56 species. The tropical Amazonian rainforest has the greatest biodiversity on Earth ($>40,000$ plant species, 3,000 fishes, 1,300 birds, 427 mammals and $>1,25,000$ invertebrates).
(b) Species-Area Relationship (Alexander von Humboldt):
  • German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt observed that within a region, species richness increases with increasing explored area, but only up to a limit.
  • The relation between species richness ($S$) and area ($A$) is a rectangular hyperbola ($S = CA^Z$). On a logarithmic scale, it is a straight line described by the equation: $$\log S = \log C + Z \log A$$ where $S =$ Species richness, $A =$ Area, $Z =$ slope of the line (regression coefficient: $0.1\text{--}0.2$ for small regions, $0.6\text{--}1.2$ for continents), and $C =$ Y-intercept.
(a) अक्षांशीय प्रवणता (Latitudinal Gradients):
Area (A) → Species Richness (S) → S = CAᶻ log-log scale log S = log C + Z log A

Q6. NCERT Intext
Give an account of Global and Indian species diversity and represent global biodiversity of major taxa of Invertebrates, Vertebrates and Plants diagrammatically.
  • Global Species Inventory: According to IUCN (2004), slightly more than 1.5 million species have been described so far, while Robert May places global species diversity at about 7 million.
  • Proportion of Major Taxa:
    1. More than 70% of all recorded species are animals, while plants (algae, fungi, bryophytes, gymnosperms, angiosperms) comprise no more than 22%.
    2. Invertebrates: Insects are the most species-rich group, making up more than 70% of all animals (7 out of every 10 animals are insects), followed by molluscs, crustaceans and other animal groups.
    3. Vertebrates: Fishes ($\sim 50\%$) are the largest group, followed by birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals.
    4. Plants: Fungi and Angiosperms dominate; the number of fungi species in the world is more than the combined total of fishes, amphibians, reptiles and mammals.
  • Biodiversity in India: With only 2.4% of world's land area, India shares 8.1% of global species diversity ($\sim 45,000$ plant species and $\sim 90,000$ animal species), making it one of the 12 mega-diversity countries.

Q7. NCERT Intext
Give a detailed account of Loss of Biodiversity (IUCN Red List figures, recent extinctions, threatened percentages, 'Sixth Extinction', and consequences of biodiversity loss).
1
IUCN Red List (2004) & Recent Extinctions: Documents the extinction of 784 species (338 vertebrates, 359 invertebrates and 87 plants) in the last 500 years (27 species in the last 20 years). Examples of recent extinctions: Dodo (Mauritius), Quagga (Africa), Thylacine (Australia), Steller's Sea Cow (Russia), and three subspecies (Bali, Javan, Caspian) of tiger.
2
Threatened Species Across Taxa: More than 15,500 species worldwide face the threat of extinction — including 12% of all birds, 23% of all mammals, 32% of all amphibians, and 31% of all gymnosperms (amphibians are the most vulnerable group).
3
The 'Sixth Extinction': Earlier 5 mass extinctions occurred before humans appeared. The 6th extinction presently in progress is caused by human activities and is 100 to 1,000 times faster than pre-human rates.
4
Three Major Consequences of Biodiversity Loss: (a) Decline in plant production, (b) Lowered resistance to environmental perturbations such as drought, and (c) Increased variability in ecosystem processes (plant productivity, water use, and pest/disease cycles).
1
Q8. NCERT Exemplar
Can you think of a scientific explanation, besides the analogy used by Paul Ehrlich ('Rivet Popper Hypothesis'), for the direct relationship between diversity and stability of an ecosystem?
1
Complex Food Webs & Alternative Pathways: In a species-rich ecosystem, food webs are complex and interconnected. If one species declines due to a disease or disturbance, predators can switch to alternative prey species, keeping the ecosystem stable.
2
David Tilman's Experimental Proof: Tilman's long-term outdoor plot experiments scientifically proved that plots with more species showed less year-to-year variation in total biomass and higher primary productivity.
3
Complementary Resource Utilisation & Resistance: Diverse species occupy different ecological niches (e.g., deep-rooted and shallow-rooted plants), utilising water, minerals and sunlight more completely and leaving no vacant niches for invasive alien species.
4
Paul Ehrlich's 'Rivet Popper Hypothesis': Compares an ecosystem to an airplane and species to rivets; popping rivets (extinctions), especially wing rivets (keystone species), eventually makes the airplane (ecosystem) dangerously weak.
1
Q9. NCERT Exemplar
"Though the conflict between humans and wildlife started with the evolution of man, the intensity of conflict has increased due to the activities of modern man." Justify your answer with suitable examples.
1
Shift from 'Need' to 'Greed': Early humans depended on nature only for basic food and shelter, whereas modern man's population explosion, industrialisation, urbanisation and greed have intensified human-wildlife conflict.
2
Massive Deforestation & Habitat Fragmentation: Tropical rainforests have shrunk from $14\%$ to $6\%$. Clearing of the Amazon rainforest for soyabean cultivation and cattle ranches, and building highways/dams across forest corridors force wild animals (elephants, tigers, leopards) into human settlements.
3
Over-exploitation & Poaching: Colonisation of tropical Pacific Islands by humans wiped out $>2,000$ native bird species, and over-hunting caused the extinction of Steller's sea cow, Passenger pigeon, Dodo, and Bali/Javan/Caspian tigers.
4
Global Conservation Initiatives: To resolve this crisis, international conventions like the Earth Summit (Rio de Janeiro, 1992) and World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg, 2002) pledged to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable utilisation.
1
Q10. NCERT Exemplar
What is an Ecosystem Service? List any four important ecosystem services provided by natural ecosystems. Are you in favour or against levying a charge on the service provided by the ecosystem?

Ecosystem Services: The wide range of ecological, life-supporting and environmental benefits that healthy natural ecosystems and their biodiversity provide to mankind free of cost.

Four Important Ecosystem Services:
1
Replenishment of Atmospheric Oxygen: The fast-dwindling Amazon forest alone produces 20% of the total oxygen in the earth's atmosphere through photosynthesis.
2
Pollination of Crops: Ecosystems provide natural pollinators (bees, bumblebees, birds and bats) without which plants cannot give us fruits or seeds.
3
Control of Floods and Soil Erosion: Plant roots bind soil particles to prevent erosion, and forest litter/humus absorbs rainwater to control floods and recharge groundwater.

Climate Moderation, Nutrient Cycling & Aesthetic Value: Purifying air and water, decomposing organic wastes, and providing priceless aesthetic/spiritual pleasure.

Opinion on Levying a Charge: While nature's services are priceless and essential for survival, levying an environmental tax/charge on industries and polluters that degrade ecosystems is justified so that people realise the immense value of biodiversity and funds are generated for conservation.
