1 MARK, 3 MARKS & 5 MARKS MASTER BANK
PART 1

1 Mark Very Short Answer Questions (All Important & NCERT)

1 Mark - Q1.
What is the difference between Asexual and Sexual reproduction? Why is offspring formed by asexual reproduction referred to as a clone?
  • Asexual Reproduction: Offspring is produced by a single parent with or without gamete formation (no fusion of gametes).
  • Sexual Reproduction: Two parents participate and it involves the fusion of male and female gametes.
  • Why called Clone: Offspring formed by asexual reproduction is morphologically and genetically identical to the parent.

1 Mark - Q5. NCERT Exercise
What are chasmogamous flowers? Can cross-pollination occur in cleistogamous flowers? Give reasons.

Answer: Chasmogamous flowers are open flowers with exposed anthers and stigma. Cross-pollination cannot occur in cleistogamous flowers because they never open at all; anthers dehisce inside the closed bud right next to the stigma, ensuring 100% autogamy (self-pollination) and assured seed-set in Viola, Oxalis and Commelina.

Differentiate between Self-pollination and Cross-pollination. Mention any two advantages of cross-pollination, and explain the Lever Mechanism of pollination in Salvia.
FeatureSelf-PollinationCross-Pollination
1. External AgencyDoes not require any external agency (or occurs within same flower/plant).Requires external pollinating agents (wind, water, insects, animals).
2. MaturationAnthers and stigma mature at the same time (homogamy).Anthers and stigma usually mature at different times (dichogamy).
3. VariationsNo new genetic varieties are formed; leads to inbreeding depression.Advantages: Introduces genetic variations (new varieties) and maintains high yield and hybrid vigour.
  • Lever Mechanism (Turn-pipe mechanism) in Salvia: It is an adaptation for insect pollination (entomophily) by bees. The flower has a bilabiate corolla and two stamens with a long connective where one anther lobe is sterile (plate-like) and the other is fertile. When a bee enters the young flower for nectar, it pushes the sterile plate inward, causing the upper fertile anther lobe to swing down like a lever and dust pollen on the back of the insect.
(Cross-Pollination)

Answer the following reasoning questions:
(a) The generative cell of a two-celled pollen divides in the pollen tube but not in a three-celled pollen. Give reasons.
(b) Why does the zygote begin to divide only after the division of Primary Endosperm Cell (PEC)?
(c) Mention three strategies evolved by bisexual chasmogamous flowers to prevent self-pollination (Protandry, Protogyny, Heterostyly, Self-incompatibility).
  • (a) 2-Celled vs 3-Celled Pollen: In 3-celled pollen grains (40% angiosperms), the generative cell has already divided mitotically into two male gametes before shedding from the anther. In 2-celled pollen (60% angiosperms), it is shed as a vegetative and generative cell, so the generative cell divides inside the growing pollen tube in the stigma/style.
  • (b) Why Zygote waits for PEC division: The Primary Endosperm Cell (PEC) divides repeatedly to form nutritive triploid endosperm tissue. The zygote remains dormant for some time so that the developing embryo gets assured nutrition from the pre-formed endosperm.
  • (c) Strategies to prevent Self-Pollination:
    • Dichogamy: (i) Protandry (anthers mature earlier than stigma, e.g., Sunflower); (ii) Protogyny (stigma matures earlier than anthers, e.g., Mirabilis).
    • Heterostyly / Herkogamy: Different heights/positions of styles and stamens (e.g., Primula).
    • Self-Incompatibility: Genetic mechanism inhibiting self-pollen tube growth, thus requiring cross-pollination (xenogamy).

(b) Mention the characteristic features and functions of tapetum and endothecium.
(c) Explain giving reasons: (i) Pollen grains are well preserved as fossils, (ii) Pollen tablets are in use by people these days.
(a) Wall Layers of Microsporangium (Outside to Inside):

1. Epidermis $\rightarrow$ 2. Endothecium $\rightarrow$ 3. Middle layers (1–3 layers) $\rightarrow$ 4. Tapetum (surrounding central Sporogenous tissue / Microspore Mother Cells).

(b) Role of Endothecium and Tapetum:
  • Role of Endothecium: Cells have fibrous thickenings and lose water at maturity, helping in the dehiscence (splitting) of the anther along the line of dehiscence (stomium) to release pollen grains.
  • Characteristic Features & Functions of Tapetum:
    1. Possesses dense cytoplasm and more than one nucleus (multinucleate/polyploid due to endomitosis).
    2. Nourishes the developing pollen grains.
    3. Secretes callase enzyme which dissolves the callose wall of microspore tetrads to free the microspores.
    4. Secretes Ubisch granules containing sporopollenin (which forms the exine), hormones like IAA, and pollenkitt/compatibility proteins.
(c) Reasons:
  • (i) Preservation as Fossils: The outer wall (exine) of pollen grain is made of a highly resistant organic biochemical called sporopollenin. It is not affected by high temperature, strong acids or alkalis, and no enzyme is known to degrade it.
  • (ii) Use of Pollen Tablets: Pollen grains are rich in nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and unsaturated fats) and are used as food supplements to enhance vital body functions and performance in athletes and race horses.
Note: The high-resolution NCERT diagram of T.S. of Young Anther and Enlarged Microsporangium is also available on our App.

5 Marks - Q2. NCERT Exercise
Give an illustrated account of the process of Fertilization and Double Fertilization in angiosperms (Germination of pollen on stigma, Path of pollen tube, Porogamy/Chalazogamy/Mesogamy, Entry into synergid, Syngamy and Triple fusion). Mention the significance of double fertilization.
1
Germination of Pollen on Stigma: Following compatible pollen-pistil interaction, the pollen grain absorbs moisture and sugar from the stigma, swells up, and the intine grows out through one of the germ pores to form a pollen tube.
2
Growth of Pollen Tube & Entry into Ovule: The pollen tube carries two male gametes ($n$) and a tube nucleus. It grows chemotropically through the style and enters the ovule by one of three routes:
• Porogamy: Entry through the micropyle (most common).
• Chalazogamy: Entry through the chalaza.
• Mesogamy: Entry through the integuments.
3
Entry into Embryo Sac & Double Fertilisation: Guided by the filiform apparatus, the pollen tube enters one of the synergids and releases both male gametes ($n$):
• Syngamy: $\text{1st Male Gamete }(n) + \text{Egg Cell }(n) \rightarrow \mathbf{\text{Diploid Zygote }(2n)} \rightarrow \text{Embryo}$.
• Triple Fusion: $\text{2nd Male Gamete }(n) + 2\text{ Polar Nuclei }(n + n) \rightarrow \mathbf{\text{Triploid PEN }(3n)} \rightarrow \text{Endosperm}$.
Significance of Double Fertilisation:
  • Ensures that nutritive endosperm ($3n$) is formed only when the egg has been fertilised, preventing wastage of nutrients.
  • Combines characteristics of both male and female parents in the endosperm (showing physiological hybrid vigour).
Note: The complete labelled diagram (Figure) of L.S. of Pistil showing path of Pollen Tube into the Ovule is available on our App.
1
5 Marks - Q3. NCERT Exemplar
Describe in detail the development of (i) Dicot embryo and (ii) Monocot embryo (with sequential stages from zygote to proembryo, globular, heart-shaped and mature embryo).
1. Development of Dicot Embryo:
  • The diploid zygote ($2n$) elongates and divides transversely into two unequal cells: a larger basal (suspensor) cell towards the micropylar end and a smaller terminal (embryonal) cell towards the chalazal end.
  • The basal cell divides transversely to form a 6–10 celled filament called suspensor, which pushes the developing embryo into the nutritive endosperm.
  • The terminal cell divides to form a proembryo, which subsequently passes through Globular $\rightarrow$ Heart-shaped $\rightarrow$ Mature embryo stages.
  • A mature dicot embryo has an embryonal axis (with epicotyl/plumule and hypocotyl/radicle + root cap) and two cotyledons.
2. Development of Monocot (Grass) Embryo:
  • The zygote divides into a basal vesicular suspensor cell and a terminal cell.
  • A mature monocot embryo possesses only one large shield-shaped cotyledon called Scutellum (pushed laterally) and a reduced second cotyledon called Epiblast.
  • The plumule (shoot apex) is enclosed in a hollow foliar sheath called Coleoptile, and the radicle + root cap are enclosed in an undifferentiated sheath called Coleorhiza.
Note: The step-by-step diagrams (Figures) of Dicot Embryogeny Stages and L.S. of Grass Embryo are available on our App.
5 Marks - Q4.
How do seeds and fruits develop in angiosperms? Explain the structure of seeds, advantages of seeds and seed dormancy to angiosperms, and give the records of oldest viable seeds.
1. Development & Structure of Seed and Fruit:
  • Seed (Fertilised Ovule): Consists of tough protective seed coat(s) (formed from integuments; micropyle remains as a small pore for entry of water and oxygen), cotyledon(s) and an embryo axis. Seeds may be non-albuminous (Pea, Groundnut) or albuminous (Wheat, Maize, Castor). In Black pepper and Beet, persistent nucellus forms perisperm.
  • Fruit (Ripened Ovary): Simultaneously, the ovary develops into a fruit and the ovary wall forms the pericarp (fleshy in Mango/Guava, dry in Groundnut/Mustard).
2. Advantages of Seeds & Seed Dormancy:
  • Pollination and fertilisation are independent of water, making seed formation more dependable.
  • Sufficient food reserves nourish young seedlings, and hard seed coat protects the embryo.
  • Advantages of Dormancy & Dehydration (10–15% moisture): Helps plants tide over severe cold in temperate zones and water stress in tropical zones; allows storage of seeds for food throughout the year and for raising crops in the next season.
3. Records of Oldest Viable Seeds:
  • Lupinus arcticus (Arctic Lupine): Excavated from Arctic Tundra; germinated and flowered after 10,000 years of dormancy.
  • Phoenix dactylifera (Date palm): Discovered at King Herod's palace near the Dead Sea; viable after 2,000 years.
5 Marks - Q5. NCERT Exemplar
(a) What are the possible types of pollinations in chasmogamous flowers? Give reasons.
(b) Embryo sacs of some apomictic species appear normal but contain diploid cells. Suggest a suitable explanation for the condition.
(c) Explain the seven means/agencies of cross-pollination (Anemophily, Hydrophily in Lemna/Ceratophyllum/Vallisneria, Entomophily, Ornithophily, Chiropterophily, Malacophily, Myrmecophily).
(a) Possible Pollinations in Chasmogamous Flowers:
  • Since chasmogamous flowers open at maturity and expose their anthers and stigma, all three types of pollination are possible: Autogamy (if anthers and stigma mature simultaneously and lie close together), Geitonogamy (pollen from another flower of the same plant), and Xenogamy (pollen from a flower of a different plant).
(b) Diploid Embryo Sac in Apomictic Species:
  • In some apomictic species, the diploid Megaspore Mother Cell ($2n$) directly develops into an embryo sac without undergoing meiosis (reduction division) (a phenomenon called diplospory or apospory). Hence, all cells of such an embryo sac, including the egg cell, are diploid ($2n$) and form a diploid embryo without fertilisation.
(c) Seven Agencies of Cross-Pollination:
  • 1. Anemophily (By Wind): Small, colourless, odourless, nectarless flowers with light/winged pollen (e.g., Maize, Grasses, Bamboo, Cannabis).
  • 2. Hydrophily (By Water): Occurs in ~30 monocot genera. In Vallisneria, pollen floats on water surface; in Ceratophyllum, pollen has specific gravity equal to water and floats below the surface; in Zostera, ribbon-like pollen moves submerged.
  • 3. Entomophily (By Insects): Bees, moths, butterflies, beetles (e.g., Salvia, Amorphophallus, Yucca).
  • 4. Ornithophily (By Birds): Hummingbirds and sunbirds (e.g., Bombax, Bignonia, Campsis radicans).
  • 5. Chiropterophily (By Bats): Nocturnal flowers with abundant nectar (e.g., Adansonia digitata / Baobab, Anthocephalus).
  • 6. Malacophily (By Snails/Slugs): e.g., Arisaema (Snake plant), members of family Araceae.
  • 7. Myrmecophily (By Ants): e.g., some members of family Rubiaceae / Mimosaceae.
